Campus Pantry (2021)
Campus Pantry (2021)
The UMD Campus Pantry works to alleviate food insecurity among the University of Maryland College Park campus community.
The UMD Campus Pantry works to alleviate food insecurity among the University of Maryland College Park campus community. Division of Student Affairs Thanks to generous donors and support, in July, 2021 the UMD Campus Pantry moved to its new, permanent location in the ground-floor of the South Campus Dining building. The Campus Pantry now includes adequate refrigeration and freezer space to consistently stock fresh and frozen foods, additional food storage space, dedicated door access, resource room for students, and teaching kitchen to teach healthy cooking basics. This fall, the Pantry has expanded its open hours to Monday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm and serves over 600 visitors per month. Our Mission The UMD Campus Pantry mission is to alleviate food insecurity among the University of Maryland College Park campus community by providing emergency food to students, faculty, and staff in need. Our Vision Our vision is a University of Maryland community where every student, faculty and staff member has reliable access to an adequate supply of affordable, safe and nutritious food. Our Story The UMD Campus Pantry opened in 2014 in response to a growing awareness of the number of students, staff, and faculty experiencing food insecurity on our campus. Since then, the team at the pantry have worked to alleviate the stress of food insecurity by providing emergency food, promoting sustainable food practices, and sharing local resources and raising awareness. Located in the ground floor of the South Campus Dining Hall, the Campus Pantry provides a safe, confidential and dignified experience for its patrons, providing short term relief and direction toward long term solutions for themselves and in some cases, their families. Food Insecurity on Campus Food insecurity – the lack of reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, safe, nutritious food In 2015, researchers from the School of Public Health conducted a food insecurity survey across campus, prompting a larger and on-going study that the Pantry is involved with today. Led by the University of Maryland Counseling Center Research Unit in partnership with the University of Maryland Department of Dining Services, University Health Center, and Maryland Parent and Family Association, the Food Access and Student Well-Being Study has surveyed over 4,901 undergraduate and graduate students since the summer of 2017. Of the students surveyed, 20% reported being food insecure, and the study found that those who reported this were more likely to report issues in other areas of wellness, whether physically, emotionally, or academically. College Park’s location and economy makes Terps especially susceptible to food insecurity, but they no longer have to endure in silence. How You Can Help Be Aware, Volunteer, and Donate! Funds raised from this campaign will go towards the UMD Campus Pantry operating funds. The operations fund supplements food donations by allowing the Campus Pantry to purchase quality, nutritious food and supplies needed to operate the Campus Pantry program including the new educational workshops. The Campus Pantry is launching Campus Pantry Kitchen Starter Kit which include olive oil, spices, salt & pepper, stock, flour and other kitchen essentials. With every $20 donated, we can provide one Kitchen Starter Kit. For more information on the Pantry, how to donate food and volunteer, visit: http://campuspantry.umd.edu/ Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents. Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarship (2021)
Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarship (2021)
The Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund supports undergraduate students at the University of Maryland pursuing careers in medicine.
The Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund supports undergraduate students at the University of Maryland pursuing careers in medicine. CMNS You have the opportunity to honor Mark Sobel Jr.’s memory by donating to the Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund, which supports undergraduate students at the University of Maryland pursuing careers in medicine. Mark Jr.’s dream was to one day become a doctor. Through this scholarship, others who aspire to the medical profession are realizing their dreams. (L-R) Mrs. Mary Grace Sobel, Dr. Mark Sobel '82 and 2021-22 Sobel Scholar Dominic Williams '22Eight students have been awarded Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarships since the scholarship was established by the family in 2016. Five Sobel Scholars have already graduated with their bachelor's degrees in biological sciences--three of them are currently enrolled in medical schools and two are in the process of applying to medical school! The remaining three are finishing up their degrees, ready to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors. With more money, we can give larger scholarships to more very deserving students. The scholarship is awarded annually and it will continue to be invested and grow to award more and more students in perpetuity. When the first scholarship was awarded, one student received nearly $2,000. Because of generous donors to this fund over the past five years, we've gone from awarding one scholarship per year to two--and each student receives more than $2,500 to address their high financial need. Your critical support on Giving Tuesday will allow us to support more students in need next year! Thank you for reaching deep into your pockets, especially this year, which is the 10th anniversary of Mark Jr.'s passing. The deserving students at the University of Maryland will forever be in your debt! About Mark Sobel Jr. Mark Sobel Jr. Mark Sobel Jr. died unexpectedly in 2011 of a heart infection at the age of 17. He was an honor roll student at Middletown High School North in New Jersey where he was involved in the Kiwanis Youth Service Organization Key Club and the Science League and Class Council. He also played football, was an avid body builder and enjoyed the beach. His dream was to attend the University of Maryland and to one day become a doctor, just like his father. As Mark Jr.’s life neared its end, his parents had to make the agonizing decision whether to donate his organs. As it came to be, Mark Jr.’s mother, Mary Grace, and his father, Mark—who is a former Maryland football player and orthopedic surgeon in New York and New Jersey—had struck up a friendship years earlier with Frank Romano. Mr. Romano was a fellow former Maryland football player who had been suffering from severe kidney issues. The Sobel family chose to donate Mark Jr.’s kidney to Mr. Romano, resulting in a successful, lifesaving gift. In a very real sense, Mark Jr. is still with us. (L-R) Mrs. Mary Grace Sobel, Frank Romano (B.S. '75, general studies) and Dr. Mark Sobel (B.S. '82, zoology) A special thanks to Jess Atkinson of 3 Penny Films for producing the video for this campaign. Student Success Service Leadership Scholarship provides financial support to students who demonstrate a commitment to the Black community through leadership.
Student Success Service Leadership Scholarship provides financial support to students who demonstrate a commitment to the Black community through leadership. Division of Student Affairs Background At the University of Maryland, we have approximately 3,500 Black undergraduate students and the average unmet need of an undergraduate student at the University is $9,000. About the Scholarship The Student Success Service Leadership Scholarship provides financial support to students who demonstrate a commitment to the Black community through their leadership and/or involvement. Current students, as well as newly admitted students, are eligible for the scholarship, and participants in the Maryland Ascent Program are encouraged to apply.
