Veterans Crisis Fund

Student Veterans at UMD

"It nearly brought me to tears to think that UMD and its affiliates cared so much about their students and veterans to provide them immediate help in unforeseen crisis situations."       - Veterans Crisis Fund recipient

  • Out of the 900 student veterans on campus, 60% have served in an active combat role, while 80% have served four or more years of active duty.
  • Last year 111 UMD student veterans had unmet financial needs totaling $653,294, ranging from a few hundred dollars per student to more than $10,000.
  • Half of our veterans are married and 35% also have dependents. Addressing unforeseen family financial needs can become a burden when a student vet is attending school full time.
  • 31% of our student veterans work full time while they pursue their studies. Nearly 35% say that they experience a high level of stress about their finances.

Who We Are

TerpVets is a student veteran organization which accepts all current and former military students as members. Currently we have around 60 active members who continually strive to make a positive contributions through community service and engagement across the university. Areas of impact include volunteering to help disabled children with Disabled Sports USA and The HSC Health Care System, raking leaves at the local American Legion and also multiple food drives for the homeless.

Below is a video link from this past years 9/11 memorial dedication hosted by TerpVets.

Our Mission

The purpose of our organization is to leverage our military values, professionalism, comradery, and commitment to service into life on campus and in our individual communities. Our project, Veterans Crisis Fund, will help ease some of the unfortunate financial burdens that some veterans encounter while trying to be successful at the University of Maryland. The fund provides assistance and support to student veterans or active duty military students who experience financial difficulties resulting from separation from the military, family and medical emergencies, and other unforeseen hardships.

Why should you donate?

The money raised will support veterans who are in dire need of financial assistance and who, without such assistance, risk being unsuccessful in their academic careers and possibly having to leave the University. Veterans will apply for the funds through the Veterans Student Life coordinator who will convene a group to determine whether the funds will be awarded.

Every donation counts and will help us come closer to our goal of being able to provide financial assistance to every student veteran or active duty military military student who finds themself in dire financial circumstances. Thank you!

Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents.  Contributions to the University of Maryland are tax deductible as allowed by law.  Please see your tax advisor for details.
