Help provide emergency resources to students in need. Division of Student Affairs The UMD Student Crisis Fund was established to provide compassionate aid to students who face unanticipated emergencies. In the spirit of caring for our students, the Student Crisis Fund enables us to award Economic Crisis Response Grants when a verified crisis has negatively impacted a student's health, safety, wellbeing, and their ability to continue their education. Our goal is to alleviate the hardships that some of our students encounter and ensure their academic experience remains uninterrupted. Types of expenses supported by the Student Crisis Fund include, but are not limited to: Emergency medical, dental, and mental health expenses, including prescriptions, not covered by insurance; Emergency or temporary housing and/or food assistance; Temporary support costs for a student in a dangerous situation due to threats or acts of violence; Transportation issues (e.g., emergency car repair not covered by insurance); Replacement of essential personal belongings due to burglary, fire, flood, or other disaster; Emergency dependent care; Cost to travel home unexpectedly for a family emergency (death, illness, disaster, etc.). Your Giving Tuesday gift to the UMD Student Crisis Fund will help provide emergency resources to students in need. James Clark School of Engineering is a catalyst for high-quality research, innovation, and learning, delivering on a promise that all graduates will leave ready to impact the grand challenges of our time in areas such as energy, sustainability, infrastructure, global healthcare, security, machine learning, and AI. In addition to a robust curriculum, Dean Samuel Graham and the leadership of the Clark School are committed to providing access to all students to gain hands-on, enriching experiential learning opportunities. Support for experiential learning lowers the economic barrier for a student's participation by funding travel, enrollment fees, and other out-of-pocket expenses. Student Clubs and Societies The Clark School is home to more than 30 clubs and societies including local chapters of international professional organizations and some exclusive to the UMD campus. Student organizations help Clark School students build a network of people with similar interests, gain exposure to hands-on projects and a variety of valuable skills to complement their classroom experience. Competitive TeamsEngineering students are sparking innovation and leading the way on cross-campus design teams and bringing home top prizes from international competitions including the Hyperloop and Solar Decathlon. And through participation on teams such as Terps Racing and Concrete Canoe, they are continuing legacies of UMD engineering excellence. Research OpportunitiesUndergraduate and graduate students engage in numerous research programs spanning bioengineering, telecommunications, robotics, materials, and energy systems by working together they create powerful insights and innovations. Help students save hundreds of dollars in textbook costs. University Libraries Textbooks cost students hundreds of dollars each semester. Depending on their major, students may pay as much as $300, $700, and sometimes even $1,000 for required textbooks. In 2015, the Libraries took a bold step to address the problem. Thanks to gifts from donors to the Textbook Reserve Fund, the Libraries were able to create the “Top Textbooks Program” and acquire the top textbooks for the 50 most popular courses at UMD and make them available for check out from the library. The program today is as popular as ever, saving our students hundreds of thousands of dollars and freeing them from financial stress that places a real burden on their university careers. Top Textbooks now covers 150 courses and we have just expanded into STEM subjects with 25 new textbooks being available for loan through the program this fall. This semester alone, over 500 students have checked out more than 1,500 Top Textbooks–saving them $200 per textbook. But there is so much more we would like to do. With your support we would like to grow the program to support over 160 courses and continue to target more high-cost science disciplines. Make your gift today! Ensure the Center for Young Children (CYC) continues to adapt to serve our community and remain at the forefront of early childhood education and research. College of Education This year, the Center for Young Children (CYC) is celebrating its 75th anniversary. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to visit, you know that the CYC is a special place. With a project-based approach to our curriculum, children learn how to study the world around them in-depth, formulating questions and engaging in experiences to learn the answers to those questions. Our location on campus gives them access to people, places, and things that allow them to explore art, biology, construction, and so much more. The College of Education can trace the origins of the CYC to the University of Maryland Kindergarten, which opened its doors in 1948. Over the past 75 years, we have provided space for more than 5,000 children to learn and grow! The CYC also benefits the College of Education and the greater campus community, serving early childhood research and offering current UMD students co-curricular opportunities like classroom observation, internships, and student teaching. Donations of any size help provide necessary facility and playground upgrades, support professional development for our teachers, and purchase materials to support children with widely varying physical and learning needs. Help us alleviate food insecurity among the University of Maryland College Park campus community and provide emergency food for Terps in need. Division of Student Affairs Thanks to generous donors and support, in July, 2021 the UMD Campus Pantry moved to its new, permanent location in the ground-floor of the South Campus Dining building. The Campus Pantry now includes adequate refrigeration and freezer space to consistently stock fresh and frozen foods, additional food storage space, dedicated door access, resource room for students, and teaching kitchen to teach healthy cooking basics. The Pantry is open Monday through Friday 10 am-5 pm. This fall, the Pantry is serving approximately 1,700 visits per month, which is up from 600 visits per month during the same time last year. Our Mission The UMD Campus Pantry mission is to alleviate food insecurity among the University of Maryland College Park campus community by providing emergency food to students, faculty, and staff in need. Our Vision Our vision is a University of Maryland community where every student, faculty and staff member has reliable access to an adequate supply of affordable, safe and nutritious food. Our Story The UMD Campus Pantry opened in 2014 in response to a growing awareness of the number of students, staff, and faculty experiencing food insecurity on our campus. Since then, the team at the pantry have worked to alleviate the stress of food insecurity by providing emergency food, promoting sustainable food practices, and sharing local resources and raising awareness. Located in the ground floor of the South Campus Dining Hall, the Campus Pantry provides a safe, confidential and dignified experience for its patrons, providing short term relief and direction toward long term solutions for themselves and in some cases, their families. Food Insecurity on Campus Food insecurity – the lack of reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, safe, nutritious food In 2015, researchers from the School of Public Health conducted a food insecurity survey across campus, prompting a larger and on-going study that the Pantry is involved with today. Led by the University of Maryland Counseling Center Research Unit in partnership with the University of Maryland Department of Dining Services, University Health Center, and Maryland Parent and Family Association, the Food Access and Student Well-Being Study has surveyed over 4,901 undergraduate and graduate students since the summer of 2017. Of the students surveyed, 20% reported being food insecure, and the study found that those who reported this were more likely to report issues in other areas of wellness, whether physically, emotionally, or academically. The University will be repeating this survey in Spring 2023. How You Can Help Be Aware, Volunteer, and Donate! Funds raised from this campaign will go towards the UMD Campus Pantry operating funds. The operations fund supplements food donations by allowing the Campus Pantry to purchase quality, nutritious food and supplies needed to operate the Campus Pantry program including the new educational workshops. The Campus Pantry is launching Campus Pantry Kitchen Starter Kit which include olive oil, spices, salt & pepper, stock, flour and other kitchen essentials. With every $20 donated, we can provide one Kitchen Starter Kit. Division of Student Affairs The mission of Fostering Terp Success (FTS) is to increase the academic and personal success of undergraduate students who have a history of foster care involvement and/or are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, and lack a supportive family system. Through our campus-wide network, we work to provide support, remove barriers, and assist students in accessing essential campus services, navigating challenges, and developing self-advocacy and life skills. Fostering Terp Success students face significant unmet needs, many of which present overwhelming barriers to success. Your donation enables us to meet critical needs and helps us ensure individualized and student-driven support! Since the program began welcoming students in Spring 2019, we have served more than 120 students via intake, referral to resources, and/or enrollment in the program. We currently have 36 students receiving case management from FTS staff as well as mentoring from a campus coach. Approximately 87% of our FTS students are experiencing homeless (and are safely housed) and 13% have been involved in foster care. Additionally, a disproportionate number of our students experiencing homelessness are BIPOC and LGBTQ+ young adults, which aligns with the national and Prince George's County, Maryland average. Your donation contributes to solutions! Here's how: Our priority is ensuring that students’ basic and most essential needs are met. This includes housing, food, clothing, personal care items, and other living essentials. Living on campus has a positive impact for college students and that’s where we want them to be; however, paying for housing and/or affording a meal plan can be a challenge. 12-month campus housing is a particularly tough barrier since students require additional funding to cover winter and summer break housing. We need help to close these gaps. Many of our Fostering Terp Success students receive financial assistance toward the cost of tuition, fees, and other expenses, but it rarely covers everything they need to be successful. The cost of required textbooks and specialty course supplies can present overwhelming barriers. Gaps in funding lead to students in classes without the necessary tools to be successful in those classes. We provide ongoing support from a full-time case manager, and each FTS student is matched with a Campus Coach to help them accomplish their goals and leverage their strengths to overcome barriers. Campus coaches are UMD faculty and staff who are trained to provide one-on-one mentoring to Fostering Terp Success students. We create a brave space where students are welcomed and embraced rather than isolated by their circumstances. We organize networking opportunities and workshops (always offered along with a hot meal) to help students enhance their inherent skills and develop important self-advocacy and life skills. Our ultimate goal is to provide students with the support and tools they need to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from UMD and transition to success beyond UMD. We now have 11 Fostering Terp Success UMD alumni and we look forward to many more! University Libraries Living Democracy 21st Century Symposium Fund Support one of the Libraries' most exciting new initiatives and help us host a symposium to expand the dialogue on democracy. The Living Democracy Initiative, established by a generous gift from the Ilona Modly Hogan Legacy Fund, is focused on advancing democratic values and civic education in society. The program will culminate in an interdisciplinary symposium in October 2024. Lae’l Hughes Watkins, Associate Director for Engagement, Inclusion, and Reparative Archives in UMD Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives, will lead the symposium. “This initiative is coming at a time when we are asking ourselves what democracy means, what our shared values are, and how best to protect our democratic way of life,” said Ms. Watkins. “We are at a fascinating inflection point in our country, and I look forward to engaging in this crucial work through the Living Democracy Initiative.” In the lead-up to the symposium, LDI has hosted a panel on libraries and intellectual freedom, and a talk on Afro-Latino historian Arturo Schomburg. Donations to the Symposium Fund will support our ongoing work, and donors will be recognized during the 2024 Symposium. UMD Libraries holds the papers of many pathbreaking Maryland leaders, including Lawrence Hogan, Sr., the only Republican representative to vote for all three articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon.
