Public Health Without Borders (PHWB) is a student-run organization at the University of Maryland that aims to improve health outcomes through sustainable health education initiatives. PHWB is committed to promoting public health activities globally, including on and around the UMD campus. Since 2014, PHWB has conducted international health projects in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, India, and Peru. These projects have focused on first aid, stress management, nutrition, prevention of infectious diseases, oral hygiene, hand washing, and oral rehydration therapy for diarrheal diseases. Currently, PHWB is developing a new intervention in India which will work with a local school and an organization that addresses violence against women.
Each trip costs approximately $10,000 for a group of UMD students to travel and implement their health education workshops in-country. Your donations to PHWB will support scholarships for student travel to conduct health education workshops with communities in Peru, India, and Sierra Leone. This January, PHWB will travel to Varanasi, India to conduct a needs assessment at a local school, which will identify the needs of the community and guide future health education interventions. Additionally, travel to Peru and Sierra Leone in the summer of 2017 revealed unmet needs in the communities, including education on water sanitation and nutrition. Therefore, donations from the Launch campaign will also be used to support scholarships for student travel to Peru and Sierra Leone in the summer of 2018.
Please see the suggested donor levels on the right; however, donations of any monetary amount are appreciated.

A $25 donation will cover the cost of materials that we use during our handwashing demonstrations. Proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease transmission. To educate children and communities about proper handwashing, we use visual tools like Glo Germ, which glows under a black light and simulates remaining germs on hands after washing.
A $50 donation will help offset costs associated with in-country travel for students. Some of the locations we travel to are remote. Ferry rides, drivers, and fuel for transportation are a few of the in-country travel expenses we have.
We want to ensure our students are prepared for travel, which includes first aid training and certification. A donation of $100 will cover the cost of a student's first aid training as well as supplies for the PHWB first aid kit.
Your donation of $500 will be used to help offset the costs of our health education interventions. Travel teams purchase train-the-trainer supplies to leave with community leaders, print hundreds of booklets in color, and laminate posters with health messages to hang in schools and health centers.
Your donation of $1000 will be used to cover airfare for a University of Maryland undergraduate student who would be unable to travel without this financial assistance.
