Of the 24 school districts located in the state of Maryland, Prince George’s County is ranked 23rd best in terms of education quality according to SchoolDigger, a database of U.S. public schools. Yet, the most notable educational institution in PG County is the University of Maryland, which is renowned for its quality of education and a world-class student and alumni body. The UMD chapter of the United InnoWorks Academy is an organization that works to leverage the educational opportunity at UMD to help the students in PG County who need it the most.
Our InnoWorks chapter hosts week-long, STEM based summer camps to engage local middle school students in a celebration of science and engineering, and encourage them to work hard to pursue education in these fields. The participants in our camp are largely underprivileged students nominated by their teachers and guidance counselors for the camp because they may benefit from an educational summer camp. Along those lines, many of our participants are kids not usually afforded the opportunity to attend summer camp due to financial constraints.
The InnoWorks summer camp is dedicated to providing an expense-free experience to our campers, and we have been successful in this goal for over a decade. We provide our campers with free curriculum booklets, experiment materials, lunches, T-shirts and medals; parents are only required to provide transportation. We hope that this year we will be able to reach more PG County students than in past years, which is why we seek financial support from the UMD community. Although we know that our reach only extends to a small fraction of students in the area, we firmly believe that every student we reach is a triumph for them, for us, and for the community.
Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents. Contributions to the University of Maryland are tax deductible as allowed by law. Please see your tax advisor for details.
