GEOH is 1!
The Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health (GEOH) Celebrates One Year!
The Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health (GEOH) at the University of Maryland (UMD) School of Public Health is marking our 1 Year Anniversary!
Join us in celebrating by contributing to our “GEOH is 1!” fundraising campaign where we aim to raise $10,000 in 30 days to help support our students and departmental activities for the coming year.
In just ONE year, we have:
- Launched two new undergraduate majors in Global Health and Environmental Justice and admitted >45 students into the new programs
- Administered over $10,000,000 in research funding
- Launched a GEOH Early Career Seed Grant Program and funded 4 proposals focused on respiratory illness prevention; recreational water safety; rainwater harvesting; and antibiotic resistance monitoring
- Published high-impact papers regarding public health implications of avian influenza emergence in cats, with strong global outreach resulting in 250+ news articles around the globe
- Trained four contractors (through our WOW Lab) to construct rainwater harvesting and treatment systems for small and urban farms, advancing safe irrigation systems for ~40 farmers in the coming year
- Published groundbreaking work on the impacts of extreme heat and drought on human health
- Expanded GEOH’s global impact by supporting low- and middle-income countries (e.g., Nepal, Tanzania, Cameroon) in addressing the health effects of climate change
- Welcomed GEOH’s first endowed faculty member, our new Clark Leadership Chair in Global Health, Dr. Heather Wipfli
- Celebrated the very first UMD Distinguished University Professor (UMD’s highest honor) for the School of Public Health, our very own Dr. Don Milton
- Hired 3 new tenure track Assistant Professors and 11 new professional track faculty members
- Developed plans for our new state-of-the-art labs and office suite in the new SPH building being built in the center of campus.
With your partnership, we can reach even greater heights! Any amount of support will help us reach our $10,000 goal. Please donate here by October 24, 2025.
