The Right to a Safe Home

One of the most devastating social justice issues in recent memory is the situation in Afghanistan where years of conflict has forced millions of people to flee their homeland. Under particular scrutiny are women and girls who are in need of humanitarian and resettlement assistance due to the harsh practices of Taliban rule.

The University of Maryland’s, College  of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) implemented a USAID funded Women In Agriculture Program in Afghanistan from 2011 – 2017. Since the 2021 fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban,  AGNR has been collaborating with Out Of The Cocoon, to bring its former Afghan staff, mostly women, to resettle in the US. We are making slow but steady progress.

We are seeking support for the domestic travel to College Park, MD of 10 or more Afghan participants for an important on campus event. On February 18th at the Stamp Student Union AGNR will host “The Right To A Safe Home,” which will feature the stories of these women. The event will highlight the challenges they faced in Afghanistan, the decision to become a refugee and the challenges of migration and resettlement. The women feel strongly that telling their story will bring to light the ongoing and worsening human rights violations as well as open discussions about immigration. We believe that having the women on campus will provide unique educational opportunities for our community and students. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to support the Afghan delegation’s travel budget.
