Hello! We are Team COAST (Cost-effective, Optimized, Applicable, Sea Turbines). We are a 7 person undergraduate research team from the University of Maryland - College Park and we are doing a four-year-long research project through the Gemstone Honors Program. There are seven of us on the team and it consists of Anthony Boboc, Owen Lehrfeld, Neha Narayan, Harrison Offenberg, Amelia Roosen, Dahlia Shafiq, and Stephen Snyder. We doing research into preventing/minimizing biofouling on tidal turbines. Right now a lot of biofouling grows on tidal turbines creating drag on the blades which prevents them from creating as much energy and does not make tidal turbines as useful as they can be. To tackle this problem we have split into two subteams, a lab group and CFD group. The lab group is going to be developing a biofilm that can be put onto the tidal turbine to prevent it from biofouling. The CFD group will then test the biofilm by using CFD software simulator to see how it lasts in the conditions of the water source. We hope you will help us along this journey by donating to our research group so we can afford a computer to run the CFD simulations on, the CFD software, and materials for the lab.
