In the summer of 2023, the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism will offer students an extraordinary opportunity to visit and report on NBA Academy Africa in Senegal.
This is the first time Povich Center students will travel internationally for an immersive reporting experience and the first time the NBA has granted student journalists access to the academy. The students will cover as many as 40 athletes and meet with representatives from the Senegal Ministry of Sports, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the sports journalists’ associations of the Gambia and Senegal. They will publish stories, visuals and graphics on Merrill College’s Capital News Service, honing reporting skills that better prepare them to be innovators and leaders in all facets of sports media.
