Education equity is the primary mission of the Academic Achievement Programs (AAP) at the University of Maryland and for the past 4 years AAP has remained true to its mission through its “Fearless 1st Abroad” campaign. The "Fearless 1st Abroad" campaign is not a moment. It's a movement to bring about greater equity for traditionally underserved groups to have access to an education abroad experience. Through scholarships and advocacy, AAP has made education abroad affordable and accessible, particularly for 1st generation students. "Fearless 1st Abroad" empowers students to bravely step into foreign countries with the mentorship of our faculty and with a community that supports and guides students through the international travel preparation process and in-country experience.

PAST FEARLESS 1ST SCHOLARS MEETING WITH VILLAGE CHIEF
In August 2022, AAP will take students to Ghana, West Africa as a part of a 3-credit course on Education Equity & Social Responsibility during the COVID-19 Pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching & learning for marginalized communities in the U.S., (particularly black and brown people), and in developing countries, were exponentially impacted due to the lack of access to resources and technologies to transition into a remote format. The course on education equity at its core is about social justice and raises questions about entitlement, access, and opportunity, which also reflects the objective of the "Fearless 1st Abroad" campaign.
