Public Health Beyond Borders

Public Health Beyond Borders (PHBB) is a globally-minded organization of students aiming to assess and address health needs in our partnering communities in Compone, Peru; Varanasi, India; Calaba Town, Sierra Leone; and Langely Park, Maryland. Our mission is to reduce health disparities and provide awareness and education about good health practices while additionally exposing undergraduate students to opportunities for global development and leadership work through faculty-mentored international trips. Our project teams focus on creating interventions about first aid, stress management, nutrition, oral hygiene, hand washing, and much more. Members also engage in fundraisers and weekly meetings to develop interventions during the academic year.

PHBB focuses on creating lasting relationships with the partnering communities through adopting sustainable interventions and culturally competent practices.  In doing so, PHBB enables students of all backgrounds to interact with one another under the broader context of public health. In addition, PHBB membership includes more than 150 undergraduate students from across majors and colleges, graduate students, and faculty. This diverse collaboration provides individuals of different ages and academic levels the opportunity to interact with one another outside of the classroom setting. PHBB exemplifies the University’s commitment to service as well as its commitment to providing living and learning opportunities to students.

Each trip costs approximately $10,000 for a group of UMD students to travel and implement their health education workshops in-country. Your donations to PHBB will support scholarships for student travel to conduct health education workshops in Peru, India, Sierra Leone, and locally in Langley Park, Maryland.

Please see the suggested donor levels; however, donations of any amount are much appreciated.

$25

Public Health Advocate

A $25 donation will cover the cost of materials that we use during our handwashing demonstrations. Proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease transmission. To educate children and communities about proper handwashing, we use visual tools like Glo Germ, which glows under a black light and simulates remaining germs on hands after washing.

$50

PHBB Supporter

A $50 donation will help offset costs associated with in-country travel for students. Some of the locations we travel to are remote. Ferry rides, drivers, and fuel for transportation are a few of the in-country travel expenses we have.

$100

Distinguished Donor

We want to ensure our students are prepared for travel, which includes first aid training and certification. A donation of $100 will cover the cost of a student's first aid training as well as supplies for the PHWB first aid kit.

$500

Public Health Champion

Your donation of $500 will be used to help offset the costs of our health education interventions. Travel teams purchase train-the-trainer supplies to leave with community leaders, print hundreds of booklets in color, and laminate posters with health messages to hang in schools and health centers.

$1,000

Student Sponsorer

Your donation of $1000 will be used to cover airfare for a University of Maryland undergraduate student who would otherwise be unable to travel without this financial assistance.
