Helps Terps with ADHD Succeed
SUCCEEDS is a resource dedicated to UMD students with ADHD struggling with academic, social, and/or mental health difficulties. Approximately 8% of college students have ADHD, which places them at risk for academic and social failure, as well as co-occurring problems like depression, suicide, and substance use. Importantly, students with ADHD are also less likely to complete college. Existing campus services are ill-equipped to deal with the chronic and pervasive difficulties experienced by these students, particularly since students with ADHD have difficulty following through on skills discussed in weekly therapy and the need for ongoing specialized therapy beyond the set number of sessions offered through most university counseling centers .
We are often contacted by other universities who would like to learn about SUCCEEDS, and by parents who are considering enrollment/transfers to UMD because of SUCCEEDS. However, enrollment in SUCCEEDS is quite limited and as a result, we often have a long waitlist, during which time students are unable to find equivalent services. With enough funding, we can expand our efforts, increase enrollment, and offer scholarships for lower-income students by hiring additional staff.
“Sometimes you hear parents say, ‘Well, I’d feel more comfortable if I sent them to a smaller school or a school that’s closer to home.’ So, this could potentially be the type of program that would help parents of students with ADHD feel more comfortable sending their kids to a large public university like Maryland and it could be a model for other universities across the country.” - Dr. Andrea Chronis-Tuscano
SUCCEEDS involves:
- Weekly group sessions led by a Ph.D or M.A. level therapist and supervised by Dr. Chronis-Tuscano
- Individualized academic and mental health coaching to enhance follow-through with skills learned in group
- Supervised study halls during which the student sets specific goals and can work through roadblocks with support.
