Public Health Without Borders is a student-run organization supported by the School of Public Health at UMD that assesses health disparities affecting disadvantaged communities around the world and creates sustainable interventions to alleviate these disparities.
For our trip to Calaba Town, Sierra Leone this June, we hope to understand what the health needs and priorities affecting the community are. Our main objectives involve teaching lessons about proper usage of clean water, hygiene and basic health as we accompany the Maryland Sustainability Engineering Organization as they build a UV water sanitation tank and a secondary school. We are targeting a group of students that may walk up to five miles to reach the school and do not have access to a clean glass of water during school, nor a school nurse during the day. Our end goal is to make the school day for these children as safe and enriching as possible and ultimately, to improve health for families in the school community.
Help us improve the lives of community members in Calaba Town, Sierra Leone by funding our educational health programs on clean water. Your support will help us provide for a community that deserves greater access to water, health education and medical materials. All of your donations will contribute to funding our health intervention, as well as airfare for UMD students to travel to Sierra Leone. For our intervention, we have developed an educational program that requires workbooks to give to the children and supplies for hygiene demonstrations with the community.
