Team Brocs: Building Resistant Organic Coated Sutures

Support Team BROCS: Building Resistant Organic Coated Sutures!

Thank you for supporting Team BROCS: Building Resistant Organic Coated Sutures! Our mission is to take advantage of the natural antimicrobial properties of cruciferous vegetables to prevent and treat surgical site infections (SSIs), a growing public health challenge that costs the U.S. healthcare system billions of dollars each year and poses serious, sometimes fatal risks to surgical patients.

Why Your Support Matters

As we tackle the urgent issue of antibiotic resistance and explore sustainable solutions, your contribution will help fund the essential materials and equipment needed for our research. Your donation will directly impact our ability to extract bioactive compounds from cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, which have shown promise in inhibiting harmful bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a leading cause of SSIs. After extracting the compounds, we will assess the effectiveness of various extracts against S. aureus biofilms, allowing us to identify optimal extraction and preparation methods for the bioactive compounds in cruciferous vegetables, which will aid in the development of effective organic sutures in future research.

Materials We Need

Your generous donations will help us purchase the following necessary materials for our research:

Whole and Frozen Vegetables: We need a variety of vegetables like broccoli, radishes, brussel sprouts, and kale to extract the bioactive compounds for our experiments.

Agar Gel: Used as a medium for propagating S.aureus biofilms and testing the antimicrobial properties of our extracts.

Test Tubes, Gloves, and Other Lab Supplies: Essential for conducting safe and precise experiments, ensuring accurate data collection.

Extraction Equipment: Tools and instruments necessary to extract, purify, and analyze the bioactive compounds from the vegetables.

How Your Contribution Helps

By supporting our project, you are helping us gather the critical data needed to identify the most effective antimicobrial compounds and extraction methods which can be later incorporated into innovative, organic sutures for preventing SSIs. These sutures could ultimately help reduce infection rates, improve patient outcomes, and reduce the financial burden of SSIs on healthcare systems.

Your donation goes beyond just funding supplies; it helps advance scientific knowledge, promote sustainable healthcare solutions, and contribute to the fight against antibiotic resistance. Thank you for believing in Team BROCS and helping us bring our vision to life!
