GT FY21: Support the BSOS Advising Center Student Emergency Fund

Why Support the BSOS Advising Center Student Emergency Fund?

2020 has been a year like any other with everyone doing their best to minimize the impacts of COVID-19 on their lives. Students in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences are no different. As they seek to continue their education, they are fortunate to have the support and guidance from an amazing team of academic and career advisers through the Feller Advising and Career Center. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is indiscriminate in who it impacts and no group of people know this better than our advisors.  Donations to the BSOS Advising Center Student Emergency Fund provide one-time emergency financial support to BSOS students who experience unexpected financial hardships impeding their academic progress toward a BSOS undergraduate degree. Funds could support rent for a student who lost their job, technology to continue safely learning in an online or hybrid learning environment, food and other basic needs. These one-time gifts allow students to avoid having to make a decision between their education and their next meal.

About the BSOS Advising Center Student Emergency Fund

The BSOS Advising Student Emergency Fund was initially established in honor of former Director Lola Hillman Byron on the occasion of her retirement from University of Maryland.  Lola Hillman Byron was a champion for students who worked tirelessly throughout her career to celebrate each student’s individual strengths while providing support and encouragement when students encountered challenges (of all kinds).  This fund continues to help students in need only because of the generous contributions of alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at University of Maryland.

Academic advisors may encourage students to apply for this fund. Questions regarding the application process may be directed to or call the BSOS Office of the Associate Dean at 301-405-1692.

Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents. Contributions to the University of Maryland are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Please see your tax advisor for details.
